National Issues Hit Locally

Lately, the firehouse a quarter of a mile from my home has been surrounded by signs reading "YOUR LOCAL FIREHOUSE MAY CLOSE" and listing the mayor's office phone number. Two years after the last big budget battle, there's another proposed budget cut which will affect the Yonkers Fire Department.

Of course, there are some who see no value in a large, well-organized, well-funded government workforce. Of course, these anti-government types aren't kitted out in turnout gear and humping Scott Air-Paks while fighting three-alarm fires. Time to ditch the stupid talking points, cuts in the government workforce have real-world implications, and real lives are at stake if "austerity" measures are taken so fatcats can keep their tax cuts.

UPDATE: To add injury to insult, this denigration of government workers is taking place as massive wildfires rage in the western U.S.

If the Dems had any balls, they'd run an ad showing the crews of firemen and cops during the 9/11 attacks, then run Mitt's quote.

It would take brains as well.

The Idea That Police, Teachers, And Firefighters Contribute To Economic Growth Is "Ignorance 101"

Yeah, what did teachers ever do to increase the skill set of American workers? As far as police and firefighters go, they may not contribute to economic growth, per se, but they sure as hell stave off severe economic contraction.

Huh.

I was unaware, Herr Limbaugh, that teachers, firefighters and police did not buy anything with their supposedly ENORMOUS salaries.

You know, remember the DEMAND side of Econ 101? The part that actually GENERATES an economy?

yeah, cuz when nobody's got money to buy widgets, THAT'S the time to build the SHIT out of widgets!

for people who claim to be all about the commerce, these people seem to have no idea how an actual business actually works.

The invisible hand will tamp down the fires. And because the hand is invisible, you'll never seen the burn marks!

I also have to wonder .. if there is no firehouse in the hood .. and the firefighters have to come from (I'm assuming) further away.. will people's insurance go up as well? More chance for more damage to your home = more insurance $$'s the companies will have to dole out.

How 'bout building widgets out of shit? Oh, that's what those Chinese slave factories do...

The invisible hand will tamp down the fires. And because the hand is invisible, you'll never seen the burn marks!

Then it will apply ointment to your burns and maybe give you a happy ending.

Especially if the ad features some hunky firefighters (I'm saying this in a totes het way, mind you).

Well, you do live in a country which hasn't gone totally batshit insane.

The premiums will be higher, so they'll be raking in more dough, and they'll find ways to minimize payouts, so they'll have a win/win on their hands.

And further, the states where the wildfires are burning, have congresscritters of the wingnutty Teabaggy persuasion who vocally supported the Paul Ryan Granny-Starvapalooza Plan. Of course, NOW they are begging for ADDITIONAL MONEY AND FIREFIGHTING HELP FROM THE FEDERAL GUBBLEMENT!!

They are fucking shameless and craven. I am not saying we should withhold help; but the firefighters should get a free nutpunch of these guys every time they get off a shift.

Of course, all the electorate will totally ignore this hypocrisy in the next election, because they are Galtian Frontier supermen who don't NEED NO HELP FROM NOBODY and anyway, they TOTALLY DESERVE IT, not like those suspiciously brown skinned other people.

Pfah.

Here in Vancouver we're getting our coast guard station axed. Because, you know, there aren't a million people here and there isn't a port.

Loved in the article, Mayor McTea is happy to withhold the federal funds dedicated to hiring personnel, given to Y____ to hire personnel, not costing Y_____ a damn dime, until the firefighters come to the table. Umm, isn't that sort of major malfeasance and can we get this jackanus measured for orange?
