Cascading Horrors

The news out of the post-storm Midwest just keeps getting worse, with at least one hundred people feared dead, and entire towns virtually destroyed. Having been excessively online while working the overnight shift, I've been following the kerfuffle about people dunking on Rand Paul, who infamously votes against aid packages to other states. The replies to Rand's cry for help aren't sympathetic: Some pearl-clutchers are up in arms about 'incivility', but Paul knows that Democratic politicians aren't going to block aid to his state. It's the worst sort of hypocrisy and cowardice. Compounding the horror is the role played by Republican policies in the disaster, the combination of fighting carbon emission regulations, sound building codes, and labor protections. This incident, in the context of the Illinois Amazon warehouse collapse, is horrific: Republican policies kill. I'm not against GOP voters in the Heartland receiving relief that their representatives wouldn't seek for people I know who suffered from recent disasters. That doesn't mean that I am above holding them in contempt. I may be a Bad Bastard, but I'm not a monster.

The people need help. The town has been destroyed, and other towns are hit bad. They will need help. They will need help for a while. People are dead, and others have lost everything but their lives. This is not the time to care about what Rand Paul thinks.

And that's what hypocrites like Rand Paul count on.

It's not a binary situation. We can be concerned about the affected people and call out this idiot at the same time.
