It's a perfect metaphor for this Maladministration and the Republican Party in general... the paving over of a portion of the White House Rose Garden at Melania Trump's behest. The removal of the Rose Garden's gloriously flowering crabapple trees to facilitate a Hatch Act violating Republican Convention is akin to Trump opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling- it involves the long-term destruction of a publicly owned thing of beauty for the short-term gain of a tiny minority of people. I mean, look at what hath been wrought by the First Concubine:

The post title was specifically chosen for its double entendre... I'm not in a particularly charitable mood regarding the Wife of the Occupant.

Melania was just giving demented donnie an open field of fire for when the cops are coming for him.
As has been pointed out on Twitter, those two photos are taken in different seasons and don't reflect the true differences between before and after. Losing the trees is very sad though.* They can be replanted, or replaced with something even lovelier.
The path might be simply practical. Melania isn't the only high-heel wearing occupant of the White House, and won't be in the future.

I can appreciate that, and she's not been an inspiring First Lady, but the amount of sex and slut shaming insults directed at her is really quite horrible. One can hate her politics and her husband without attacking her for her previous occupations or for her husband's infidelity (which is what 'First Concubine' implies).
*The massive fig tree in the property behind us which overhangs four properties, including ours, is coming down next week as the owner is sick of paying the cost of blocked drains. We've spent several thousand dollars cutting back branches and so on ourselves, but I'll be so sorry to see it go. Not only does it offer valuable shade in the summer, but it also supports a variety of parrot species, fruit bats, possums, and pythons.
We do have other trees in our yard, though none as tall and broad as this fig. I've told Spouse I want him to immediately start working on improved the degraded soil the tree will leave behind, and then hopefully next year, we can grow a quandong tree. They only get to be about 40m (130 feet) or so tall :)
Melania's horrible, she went full-birther on Obama, she's run up a $675,000 haircut tab on the taxpayers, and she's as callous and clueless as Marie Antoinette.
I think she lives a life of perpetual rage because that asshole husband of hers didn't croak years ago.
