Time Was Tight... Sadly, Now It's Up

I've long been a fan of Booker T and the M.G.s, so I read with some sadness of the passing of Donald "Duck" Dunn. The amazing thing about Booker T and the M.G.s was the fact that, starting in the early 60's, they were a racially integrated band based in a Southern City (I'd like to note here that Archie Bell and the Drells was also an integrated group). I'm reminded of a political cartoon by Dr Seuss- employing both the black keys and the white keys is key to a harmonious tune. Thanks, Duck Dunn, for the fantastic music and for the wisdom to transcend the bigotry of the milieu in which you found yourself which made it all possible.

Here's a recent version of my favorite Booker T and the M.G.'s song:

Happily, Booker T. Jones is still going strong, he appeared on the David Letterman show last week.

Also, Mark Shurilla died.

Of course, none of you know him, and why should you? But he was in tons of local bands, and I saw him in the audience at the Tossers show just recently.

If anybody has ever heard the CD "Polka Comes To Your Haus!" his punk-polka band, the Blackholes, had two songs on there, including the Hitler stomp "Blitzkrieg Over Kenosha". worth searching out the disc just for that one.

Gonna miss him.

We all have our local heroes, old chum. I hope the local musicians gather together to give him a kick-ass sendoff.

I imagine Shurilla will get many mentions at this:

Not the least because his band the Blackholes is playing.

They played a small place? Hell, I'd a thunk they'd have played the Beacon, at least.

Does Joan Jett know of this?

Death sucks, but it does make room for new people, and it informs us that we have to live well, because we may go at any minute. Without death, we'd take life for granted... without the bitterness, would we recognize the sweetness when we encounter it? I think that we should all strive to increase the sweetness for our fellow humans, but I'm not a sociopath.

And DICK CHENEY IS STILL ALIVE

I think he mainlines stem cells from cloned fetuses.

I know. Well, at least John Derbyshire has cancer.

As much as I hate the Derb, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
