Gaddafi Dead

The big news story of the day is the death of Qaddafi. I've hated Gaddafi ever since the death of a high school friend in the Lockerbie bombing. I can't be elated at his death, though- the whole "dancing in the streets to celebrate death" is repulsive to me. That being said, I think the world at large, and the Libyans in particular, are better off with the colonel dead. I just hope that our foreign policy fosters real democracy and a just society in Libya. We don't have a good track record when it comes to that, though. The third-world strongmen are toppling, let's not replace them with more of the same.

UPDATE: Fuck, the looters are already making their plans to plunder Libya. What the hell is wrong with these monsters?

That's for sure. Qaddafi's out, but friends of democracy Bahrain and Saudi Arabia remain.

Lesson: always play ball with our multinational oil companies, and you can repress your populations all you want. With our planes/bombs/etc.

As for Lockerbie, maybe Gaddafi or Qaddafi is guilty. But when oil, the Middle East, and violence converge, I believe nothing our government tell us.

  2. I was shocked this morning when I heard about all of this. I'm not sure why but, I was.

I'm so sorry about your friend. It's never easy losing someone but to lose them in such a tragic way is even worse.
And I agree, I hate, absolutely hate all the "happiness" and elation to death. Anyone's death.

As a Mother, no matter how badly my child was .. if somebody was dancing at their death... that would kill me.

Hopefully things will get better for the Libyan people.

    Yeah, ain't that the truth!

Even worse, he was an only child. His funeral was one of the most difficult times of my life- like I wrote, it's hard to see all of your high school friends dressed in suits, and looking completely stunned.

  5. Your update sickens me.
Blah. Gawd I hate so many people right now.
I need some happy news. Lack of sun and a-holes like Lindsey Graham are doing my head in.

An only child?? His poor parents. :(
Do you ever see them? I didn't read the whole post that you did a year or so ago-just a paragraph or two.

  6. I always thought 90% of the reason the establishment hated Gaddafi was that he wouldn't let the oil companies loot Libya. I am happy the people of Libya are out from under his rule, and that he won't continue to try and hire mercenaries to destabilize the new government. I think a much better outcome would have been a quick trial in the Hague and long stay in a not very big cell. Celebrations of death are savage.
