Conservatives are continually throwing tantrums when they don't get their way, and one of the main forms which these tantrums take is talk of secession, from the formation of the Confederate States of America to the Texit. Last week, there were votes in Oregon counties to secede from the 'too liberal' state and join with Idaho to form a Greater Idaho, incorporating parts of California as well. Rural Republican Oregonians just can't deal with the fact that they are outnumbered by liberal residents of the Portland metropolitan area, so they want out. This is all part of a right-wing white-nationalist American Redoubt movement which seeks to form an all-white ethnostate in the northwest, centered on Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. Any secession attempt necessitating votes from the state legislatures and Congress, these efforts are doomed to failure, but somebody has got to be looking to make bank on deplorables' discontent.
To make matters even stupider, nutjob Ammon Bundy wants to be the Maharaja of MAGAstan, and, while not even eligible to do so, filed to run in the Idaho gubernatorial race, which is almost certainly s grift. I can just see his slogan 'Make Greater Idaho Great Again'.
Post title taken from this masterpiece by the B-52s:
Get out of the state you're in, indeed.
Taxpayers in Portland, Salem and Eugene will doubtless feel great relief as taxpayers in Boise groan under the weight of new revenue-hungry counties.
ReplyDeleteDoc Amazing is right. We live in Bend, the only prosperous central Oregon city, and greater Idaho excludes us, no doubt because it's blue and & getting bluer.
ReplyDeleteOf course, there's also the whole bit about Idaho's minimum wage being about half of Oregon's.
ReplyDeleteThese right-wing morons really believe that we would miss them if they go.
I'm way too old to become a refuge but it will happen if this stupid, stupid, stupid idea (as farfetched as it seems) comes about. My county voted this down but there we are right in the middle of the Megastan map, AND we voted it down after the county commissioners couldn't get enough signatures to put it on the ballot but did anyway. I suspect when the newly minted Idahoans start paying sales tax their shiny new white supremacy state might seem a little dingy. Whats wrong with people? Bonnie who's not anonymous
ReplyDeleteBeing from Las Vegas Nevada, it's been such a relief that the Bundy idiots are gone. One of the most antisocial, it's all about me, miserable families I know. They refused to pay their fair share of taxes here in Nevada, and doing the same elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteKind of feel sorry for Idaho, kind of.
Bonnie, we'll airlift you out if stupidity takes over.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine why the Bundys have been allowed to carry on in this manner for so long. Hell, Al Capone was nabbed for tax evasion, time to throw all of the Bundys in prison.
Do the states have to be adjacent? Everyone in this house in Georgia would love to join Oregon. We took a vote.
ReplyDeleteLOL ~ "We live in Bend, the only prosperous central Oregon city ... "
ReplyDeleteBeer Town USA, and we're running out of water.
Now that I'm roped in ... it's a setup for a Lost Cause complaint. I have my grandparents memories, these people have been whining about this for as long as I can remember. State of Jefferson. The key is to have something to whine about, piss and moan about those others thwarting the will of the people. There's probably more snowflakes around here than anywhere, and most of 'em came from someplace else.
Caveat: I was one of those guys that came down out of the woods thirty years ago asking the question "what are we going to do around here when the woods shut down? When the logging jobs are gone?" Beer. That was the answer.
I love Idaho, just don't want to live there ...
There have been previous similar Redneckistan plans before, like one a while back about splitting off Northern California itself, or dividing the state in three or four pieces, and one for non-Denver/Boulder Colorado or hooking up the Iowa part of Colorado with actual Idaho.
ReplyDeleteNothing will ever happen with any of it. It's too hard. If there was anything to any of this it would be to make the Dakotas into one state, except no one there wants that because now they have one Senator for every ten people or something like that.
But interesting in that enough of them want one of these plans to indicate what they are thinking, but then we already know about MAGAts. I was wondering about the line in northern CA, and a comment here explains the Weed factor. I thought it was just motels and a Safeway on Rt 5.
Bundy probably wants governors office so he can mobilize Id national guard, "deputize" so called militias and invade Oregon and Wash. St. to help build a greater idaho.
