The most maddening thing about the recent murder of two women in Tallahassee, and the wounding of five others, is that the perpetrator, like many shooters, had a history of violence against women. In the case of this current CHUD, two current arrests for groping women in 2012 and 2016, neither of which resulted in prosecution.
If the perpetrator's sexual crimes had been taken seriously, there is a good chance that he would have been incarcerated, or prevented from owning firearms. Yet again, the toxic intersection of America's rape culture and its gun culture has resulted in death and injury. I'm not exactly holding my breath in the hope that either will be addressed.
Thank you for saying this. As a female who used to have a traditionally male job, sexual harassment was background noise, always present. When I told an MD friend (a very southern guy) that I used to keep a large fixed blade knife strapped to my calf in case I was ever attacked while on my own doing field work, his response was "I think the lady doth protest too much". He thought I should just lay there a d enjoy being raped should such an event happen. He become ex-friend after that.
ReplyDeleteMy mom carried a dirk with her as a teenager riding the subway to school. She actually brandished it and took a swipe at a guy who told her to hand over her wallet, scared the asshole right off the train.
