Today, I have a day off, and was basically hunkered down trying to cope with the outrageous heat that we are experiencing here in the City of Y______. It's flirting with triple digits, and the humidity provides for a heat index of about 105 degrees. Great... even I am having a bad hair day. I had been flirting with the idea of hitting the Hudson River Museum to see Federico Uribe's "Fantasy River" exhibit. Just before I was going to jump into a cool shower, I got a text message from a co-worker whose "check engine" light came on and her car was running rough, so she had to bring the car to her mechanic. I had to deal with that nonsense a few months ago, so I can totally empathize with her situation. Accordingly, I'm going to drag my sweaty ass to work so I can cover for her (can't leave good people in the lurch).
I have long maintained that the only thing worse than owning a car is not owning a car.
I don't know if Gary Numan would agree with me:
Oddly enough, I think the only song which sampled Gary Numan's "Cars" was a 1989 release by Cool G Rap and DJ Polo:
I remember "Cars" being ubiquitous the summer it was released, it received constant airplay. It's well-nigh inconceivable that the song hasn't been sampled more often.
A little piece of black electrical tape will cover that "Check Engine" light right up. Problem solved!
ReplyDeleteI have been reading the lamentations of people all over the US regarding the brutal heat wave they are currently experiencing.
ReplyDeleteHey, I've lived in Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Ft. Worth and found myself in Phoenix/Tempe and Las Vegas too many times to mention.
So I offer two themes worth mentioning. First, heat is easier to withstand in a place that is often hot - they build out the infrastructure to allow for it. Atomic air conditioners, misters, lots of swimming pools and considerations of shade and minimizing the suffering. The more unusual the heat condition, the less prepared the community is to cope.
Second, let me just slightly smugly once again tell you about Burlingame. We're just south of the SF fog belt, so we get much more in the way of blue skies and sunshine, but today was a typical day - never quite reaching 70 degrees on the bizarre Fahrenheit scale, with a gentle breeze in from the ocean and bright yellow-on-blue skies. For someone as heat-averse as me, this is as close to perfect as ol' madame Gaia offers...
Just you wait until global warming really kicks in.
ReplyDelete~
I can no longer remain silent. Your abode is secret no longer, clearly the city which you refer to as Y_______ is none other than the legendary sunken city of Ys! Yes Ys! The city which vanished beneath the waves off the coast of Brittany over a thousand years ago when the pagan queen Dahut called from her orgy that the giant bronze gates be opened during a storm at high tide! The city which will return when Paris, in its turn, sinks beneath the waves!
