Yeah, I know the achievement of "peak wingnut" is impossible... peak wingnut is an asymptote, forever approached, but never reached. Yet, this week has pretty much been a banner week for wingnut craziness, and the latest example may be the final nail in the Romney/Ryan campaign's coffin.
Forget the GOP trying to distance themselves from Todd Akin's odious and completely non-factual statement, Paul Ryan has blithely asserted that rape is pretty much just another method of conception, for all of it's bearing on the abortion issue. Here's the mild-mannered sociopath and virulent misogynist's own words:
“I’m very proud of my pro-life record, and I’ve always adopted the idea that, the position that the method of conception doesn’t change the definition of life. But let’s remember, I’m joining the Romney-Ryan ticket. And the president makes policy. And the president, in this case the future President Mitt Romney, has exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother, which is a vast improvement of where we are right now.”
Yeah, he doesn't give a shit about the ability of women to determine what they will do with their own bodies, their own lives. At least he has the candor to let us know what he thinks, unlike the weasel at the top of the ticket. I think it's pretty safe to say that, barring massive vote suppression, this race is over. And to think, the GOP hasn't even had its convention yet.
And of course, there's this.

The Republicans are going full-goose-mansplaining on the reproductive issues.
ReplyDeletePeak Wingnut is more than just asymptotic, I think. There's a magnetic repulsion effect combined with positive feedback; the crazier the wingnuts get, Peak Wingnut moves even further into LoonyLand; and this creates the compulsion for the nutters to GET EVEN CRAZIER.
This is how Michele Bachmann ends up in Congress.
and the hilarious thing about the mansplaining, is that they seem to be completely confused by the little ladies' inability to understand what the white guys are saying.
ReplyDeleteA hurricane could end the campaign too. Not that I'm hoping for a death-toll of two or anything.

ReplyDeleteUh uh. This is a massive underestimation of the American population's collective combination of ignorance, apathy, bigotry and tribal hatred. This election is CLOSE, and will be decided in a few meaningless counties in states that are, not to put too fine a point on it, NOT NY or California.
Here's my fear: Obama will win the 270+ electoral votes required, but Romney will end up with a larger popular vote. Sure, that has happened before, but this time it'll be a massive freakout and another trip the Supreme Court. And we already know how that goes.
Most recent polling has Obama up 9% with registered voters, but only 2% with likely voters. There's a lot of Obama hate on the far left, and couple that with a very effective voter suppression program and you've got a very challenging electoral landscape.
I just think it's important to note that, of all the things this election is nominally 'about', reality isn't one of them. Actual policies and ideological beliefs, no matter how paleolithic and loathsome to you and I, actually attract as many American votes as they drive away...
I'll see your fear and raise, mikey.
ReplyDeleteObama wins and continues his bankster fellating polices, with the addition of "deficit reducing" austerity measures (aka going after Medicare, etc).
These work out just as well for the American people as they do when Republicans are in charge, and thus we get President Palin in 2016.
~
Thunder, the President can't "go after" Medicare. He doesn't have the constitutional authority. Remember when GW Bush "went after" social security? How'd that work out for him?
ReplyDeleteLegislators who want to be re-elected know they can't reduce Medicare benefits. Every time either party suggests it, the other one jumps on it, promising to protect Medicare.
It's a scam - they don't really CARE about the deficit Thunder. Surely you get that by now - they'll take their tax cuts the old fashioned way - deficit financed, just like under Bush...

Sorry, thunder, but this is just flat out wrong.
By any metric, the performance of things relative to normal people; wages, unemployment, benefits, standard of living, even the fucking deficit if anybody in he Village would be honest--performs better under Democrats, even corporate whores like Clinton or Carter.
most people do, indeed, have better results with Democrats in power. We can argue about the extent of those benefits, or their placement, but you can't seriously claim that they are just the same as they were under Reagan or Bush. And FFS, under Romney it would be medieval.
Or were you under the impression that Michael Moore was on the ballot this year?
Honestly, I was shocked to learn that even some Republican women were grossed out by Akin's comments (and to a lesser degree, the whole contraception debacle). I was wondering what it would take to wake them up. I guess treating rape like it's no biggee'll do it.
