A Chilling Effect on Hotheads is a Good Thing

Here's a bit of good news, the New York City Law Department has decided not to defend the infamous Anthony Bologna in an upcoming civil suit. I think it's a great decision, the city should not be wasting any money defending the indefensible actions of this hothead, authoritarian asshole. Of course, not everybody agrees with this stance- for instance, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly had this to say:

"I think it could have a chilling effect on police officers taking action. It's a discretionary decision by the Corporation Counsel and I'm concerned about an adverse effect on officer's willingness to engage."

He thinks it would have a chilling effect? I sure hope it would, hotheads need to be chilled. Also, a willingness to engage should not include a willingness to assault peaceful demonstrators... this is an engagement that should not be kept. We need there to be an adverse effect on bullshit like that.

  1. Of course! Ray Kelly objects to a decision that fails to encourage authoritarianism.

  2. It's very true. If law enforcement personnel were more often held accountable for hurting and killing the people they are sworn to protect it would have a distinctly "chilling effect" on their hurting and killing civilians.

Where these fascist wannabes go wrong is when they operate on the premise that this would somehow be a BAD thing...

  3. Agreed, B^4. I also think they need some time in the Time-Out chair with a dunce cap on their heads. I'm not kidding.

Oh, yeah, can't shake off that iron boot.

The NYPD cruisers all have CPR stenciled on their quarter panels- Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect. Too bad too many of them don't live up to the motto. It's an affront to all the good cops out there.

  5. I hate cops just as a matter of course, and it seems reasonable to hate this guy. But he's a representative of NY and it looks like the city just wants to get off the hook when it shouldn't be allowed to.

Yeah, there's always that. That being said, I think that there should be a separate civil suit against the NYPD and the City government. Martial law on behalf of thieving scoundrels is unacceptable.
