I was going to do my typical post-lecture recap, but I left my notebook behind when I ran out the door. I could put up a half-assed post about last night's lecture, but there were a lot of memorable quotes I'd like to put up verbatim. I will make sure that I get on the ball tomorrow.
Seeing as I'm not writing the recap today, I feel that I should make note of the passing of the glamorous diva Donna Summer. To remember her, I'm posting the video of I Feel Love, which was really ahead of its time:
That song sounds more like "techno" or "electronica" than "disco". As much as some people claim there was an anti-disco backlash, I think that disco largely morphed into several other musical styles... I know I've touched on disco before, but I've never written my threatened "disco post". Has it become just a running gag, or will I make good on this threat? I can't say, but any disco post won't be written tomorrow, because I've got a lecture recap to write.
Today, though, it's all about dancing, and remembering a true diva. Rest in peace, Ms. Summer.
That song was awesome to dance to... as well as other things...
ReplyDeleteOT- no purslane yet. Had our April been as warm as our March, we'd have been swimming in it, but April, and even May, have been cool. My rhubarb, which is usually a monster by now, looks like a miniature plant. It's very cute, but decorative. Hmmph.
I LOVE that song! And, I loved disco. I never acted like I didn't when I was a kid. My friends were saying "Disco sucks!" and I was like... "then get outta mah way cause I gots to dance!"
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was a strange child. ;)
Anyhow.. you're post better not be about how disco "sucks" or I'll be making a trip to New York to do some damage. IF ya know what I mean... I haven't been around long enough to know your disco feelings...
((Hugs))-unless you hate disco and then I'll take that hug back Mister!
Laura
I've got lamb's quarters coming up in front of the house, and the nettles are growing to beat the band at work.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow.. you're post better not be about how disco "sucks" or I'll be making a trip to New York to do some damage. IF ya know what I mean... I haven't been around long enough to know your disco feelings...
ReplyDeleteHey, now! I proudly posted Rasputin!
"then get outta mah way cause I gots to dance!"
ReplyDeleteI hear ya, Laura!! While I love all sorts of music, and should not love disco because of some of those musical genres, I loved the dancing... the free, hot-mess dancing.
B^4- your post the other day... I think you showed clover, but were discussing something else... anyhow, it brought back memories of my best friend and I eating buds off of clover and calling them pickles. And then we'd move on to her mother's chive patch... and then on to the neighbor's blueberry bushes... neither of which are wild, at least there.
I heart Donna!
ReplyDeleteBut never forget...

ReplyDeleteThat's funny! I like the flowers, but the other three-leaved plant that I adore is wood sorrel- you can tell it apart from clover because each leaf is heart-shaped. The sour flavor is really nice.
But never forget...
Who could?!?!?
It is VERY WRONG that wood sorrel and garden sorrel have the same name when one is an Oxalis and t'other is a kind of dock. Just because they're both sour.
ReplyDeleteIt's like you people are TRYING to annoy the taxonomists.
There was real disco backlash.
ReplyDeleteIn a way I think the sound people were getting irritated by was driven by record reps: the players and the singers were mostly really good and didn't need all the orchestration. I picture label guy coming in and suggesting horns and strings.
"I Feel Love" was recorded in Germany, away from meddling idiots. Now that I think of it, no way does this get out of an American studio without strings.
