Houston, She Had a Problem

I have to confess that I really didn't listen to a lot of Whitney Houston's music... I had nothing against her, but my musical tastes didn't run toward conventional pop songs. Still, it's a shame that she died at the age of 48... I still remember co-workers discussing rumors of her death in 2001. Ms. Houston is another one of those cautionary tales- the talented singer who succumbed to drug addiction. She also had a problem with the men in her life, it seems that she attracted all sorts of scumbags.

Rather than focusing on the sordid later years, I'd rather remember Ms. Houston's early career, when she was young, had a promising future ahead of her, and she wasn't the person onstage with a substance abuse problem.

Once in a while, there's a youtube comment that is worth reading... I present:

RIP to a gorgeous, talented performer. I miss you, Serge.

Adieu, Mademoiselle Houston, adieu!

  1. Seb was watching tv in our bedroom. I came in to tell him something and noticed them announcing her death.

It was shocking yet somehow, not surprising I suppose.

I wasn't a huge fan of hers either. Not really my style but like you, I can appreciate what a gift she had in her talent. Such a shame at such a young(ish) age. And of course, she has a daughter who, while is not a baby, still could use her Mother. It makes me sad to think of all the things that Whitney will miss in her childs life. Things that a daughter needs her Mother for. :(

  2. Not a fan either, but always saddened when an artist or musician dies. Humanity is better for their work.

  3. ...and just to make us all completely abandon any optimism for our fellow Americans, a thread at Fox News about her death nearly instantly becomes overrun with racist twaddle and heinous asshole comments:

Don't worry, the link is to digby, not the thread in question. Balloon Juice and Little Green Footballs have samples, if your stomach is feeling particularly strong.

Makes me want to go buy her whole catalog, just to spite the screaming inbred racist fucks.

When my co-worker came to relieve me at midnight, he told me that he'd seen her perform live shortly after he'd emigrated from the U.K. He still remembers her performance as one of the most moving he'd ever experienced.

There's no karma, no universal justice... sad, that...

Yeah, this is tragic. She was too young.

    Yeah, like so many others!

Holy crap, there's some hideous hate there, but liberals are the real racists. That's the first LGF link I've clicked through in years- I hope that asshole remembers every day of his life that he contributed to the creation of this monster. He's still got some atoning to do before I'll trust the mofo. I'm talking David Brock levels of atonement.

LGF takes responsibility for calling attention to its toxicity.
