So the summers are dry, and the overwhelming scent is a dry, dusty smell my sister and I called 'dried up rattlesnake grass' - rattlesnake grass being some kind of wild grass that has little bulb or seed pod on the stem that makes a soft rattling sound when you shake it next to your ear.

That smell - whenever I encounter it all these years later - changes the way I feel in every way. It's not just a fond emotional state, there's a visceral physical reaction. It's not related to any one single memory - there were hundreds, perhaps thousands of days characterized by that particular smell - but rather a whole way of feeling about life, a bittersweet wave that transports me back to my carefree youth, even as my brain knows there's no route back there...mikeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13057701313718589322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526498499129692237.post-32582043194514290202016-02-13T13:05:30.542-05:002016-02-13T13:05:30.542-05:00Campfires remind me of being in the Boy Scouts. Men tend to just use the basics - it's red, yellow, blue, or green.

I was camping last summer, and the smell brought back a vague but strong sense of the past. I asked my parents later if we went camping a lot when I was a kid., We didn't, but we had a fireplace when I was very young, and we apparently used it a lot. I had no idea!

Somehow, the smell of the campfire was bringing out something in my head I didn't know was there.
